Take The Wheel

When you relocate and settle in a new country there is always a long list of things to do, as well as a long list of things to get used to. For many people, one of the biggest of these is driving - adapting to the road rules and customs. But before you can take the wheel you should be absolutely certain you're licensed to drive.

licensed to drive

Anyone living in Spain who has a driving licence issued by an EU country may simply keep on using that licence for as long as it's valid. However you may exchange it for a Spanish one if you choose to (a fairly simple process), and you have to exchange it if you commit a driving offence.

It gets more complicated if you hold a licence issued by a country outside of the EU. Your issuing country may have an agreement with Spain allowing you to exchange your licence, as long as you do so within your first year of residence. But if your licence was not issued by one of these countries you'll have to take a full driving test - in Spanish!

You'll find all the details relevant to EU and non-EU issued licences - and how to go about making a licence exchange - on the AngloINFO INFOrmation Page on Foreign Driving Licences in Spain.

If you need to start from scratch, see the INFOrmation Page on Spanish Driving Licences to find out what to expect and how to go about preparing for and taking the test.

And to get some professional help to tackle that test, see the Driving Schools, Instructors & Lessons category of The AngloFILE, AngloINFO's comprehensive directory of local English-speaking businesses and services.
