Calahonda on the Costa del Sol

Information about Calahonda, including the main tourist attractions, local pasttimes, history, geography and important telephone numbers. Links to helpful information for visitors and residents alike.

Calahonda is an urbanisation (housing development) established in the 1960s which has grown so large that it now nearly qualifies as a town. It is located between Fuengirola and Marbella, within the Municipality of Mijas. The town is a 5 Km walk under or over the motorway from the beach (the nearest is at Puerto Cabopino) and has a very large British population.

Local life

There are three main shopping centres in Calahonda. Across the motorway from the beach is Dona Lola, a large complex with a row of bars and restaurants, tennis courts, an indoor swimming pool and a park.

Situated on the east side of Calahonda is Calypso, this is home to many residents of all nationalities. There are two English bakeries, a betting shop, banks and restaurants. There is also a night club situated behind the Cepsa petrol station, a tobacconist, Internet café, and restaurants.

A commercial centre, Los Olivos, has a supermarket, bank, café, newsagents and travel agent.

Just down the road is a commercial centre, El Zoco, with a supermarket, banks, newsagents, shoe shops, gift shops, English cafés, a row of restaurants and quite a few bars and pubs.

Across the road from El Zoco are more shops, including an English shop, a supermarket, bars, gift shops and restaurants and a veterinary clinic and a taxi rank. A little further on from this shopping centre is the CIC Calahonda International College, an English school where GCSEs can be taken.

Leisure Activities In and Around Calahonda

Calahonda is a popular vacation destination mainly for the numerous golf courses in the region.

  • For details on English-speaking sports facilities on the Costa del Sol, see The AngloFILE: Sport & Leisure

And as Calahonda is an enormous planned development, it has many amenities including tennis, swimming pools and fitness centres available. Water sports are popular at Puerto Cabopino. The Calahonda and Dona Lola beach is fairly rocky by the sea. There are a few places that rent out sun beds and parasols.
