Estepona on the Costa del Sol

Information about the city of Estepona, including the main tourist attractions, local pasttimes, history, geography and important telephone numbers. Links to helpful information for visitors and residents alike.

Estepona is 75 Km Southwest of Malaga airport and 45 Km Northeast of the Gibraltar airport. Once a Roman fishing village, it still retains its original charm, perhaps better than any other town on the Costa del Sol. The town, with cobbled streets, few skyscrapers and traditional whitewashed Andalucian houses has a predominantly Spanish population. The beach front is the most modern area, with a promenade lined with palm trees, flowers, bars, restaurants and beach shops.

Local Life

The grey sand beaches and water sports such as jet skiing, scuba diving and water skiing bring many visitors to Estepona. The town is a popular holiday resort for families trying to avoid the busy Costa del Sol night life. There are a few discos and clubs but more tapas bars and restaurants with live music; most close by midnight. Plaza de las Flores is a good place to find good international and traditional Spanish food.

At 06:00 most days a fish auction is held in the harbour.

Tourism

A spectacular 18th century church that was once a Franciscan monastery can be found in Plaza de San Francisco.

Every Thursday a tour of the church starts at the tourist office and stops are made to take in the most popular views of the town. A bull ring and several bullfighting museums are located on the outskirts of town.

At Selwo Adventure Park just on the outskirts, visitors can see exotic animals including lions, rhinos, giraffes and elephants up-close.

Leisure Activities In and Around Estepona

With over 300 days of sunshine a year, golf is a popular activity in the Estepona area. Many of the courses are considered among the best in Europe.

Every Wednesday on Avenida Juan Carlos I, food and clothing are on sale at the local market. On Sunday the market takes place at the port.
