Nerja on the Costa del Sol

Nerja is located 50 Km east of Malaga and is the tourist capital of Axarquia. A town of ancient origins, it has generally existed as a small fishing village but now has a population of approximately 20,000 residents. Nerja marks the eastern tip of the Costa del Sol and has 13 Km of beaches. Tourism in Nerja is thriving, with many tourists visiting for water sports such as canoeing, scuba diving, sailing and water skiing. Nerja is a growing, but still traditional town with small winding roads and bars, cafes and restaurants.

Tourism

Two main attractions draw visitors to Nerja, the Nerja Caves (Cuerva de Nerja) and the Balcony of Europe (Balcón de Europa).

The Nerja Caves draw tourists with it's stalactites and stalagmites. Pre-historic remains and cave paintings found there are believed to be over 20,000 years old. Scientists continue to explore the caves and believe they may prove to be one of the largest unexplored cave systems in Europe. The caves are the third most-visited tourist site in Spain.

The Balcony of Europe, situated in the historic heart of Nerja, is a large promenade running along the edge of a cliff towards the sea. Once the site of a 9th century Moorish castle, the Balcony offers magnificent views of the beaches and coves hugging the Mediterranean sea. A horse-drawn carriage can be hired to explore The Balcony of Europe and to see some of the towns old monuments and buildings, including the 17th century Church of The Savior, the 16th century hermitage Nuestra Senora de las Angustias, and the charming Gardens of Capistrano Playa that lead to Burriana Beach.

Leisure Activities In and Around Nerja

The countryside around Nerja has plenty to offer to walkers, cyclists, horse riders, paragliders and bird watchers. Information and maps can be found at the Nerja tourist information centre.

For those wishing to stay in Nerja, there is a campsite on the outskirts of the town as well as one in the park above Nerja Caves. There are also plenty of hotels, hostels and restaurants. 

Most of Nerja's discos, bars and pubs can be found at Tuti-Fruti Square.
