Located between Marbella and Estepona, San Pedro de Alcántara is a quieter and less expensive alternative to the ritzy Marbella and Puerto Banus. A former sugar cane farming community, it has grown more slowly and less dramatically than most nearby cities and towns. San Pedro is 10 Km from Marbella and just a few kilometres from Puerto Banus and is part of the autonomous community (comunidad autónoma) of Andalucia. It has impressive views of the Mediterranean and the mountains. Local LifeSan Pedro is divided by the A340 road into the old town in the north, and the new town (Nueva Alcantara) to the south. This road can be quite busy at times, especially with rush hour traffic heading into and out of Marbella. The old town is a more traditional Andalucian town, with tree-lined streets, whitewashed houses, cafés and small shops. The new town has walled villas, modern housing developments and an international school, King's College.
Along the beachfront there are bars, restaurants and shops and places to rent equipment for water sports. Tree-lined streets and small squares provide some relief from the sun.
