Regional Information for Costa del Sol

Málaga province has a rather limited train service with two local lines (C-1 and C-2). The first leaves from the Málaga Renfe station, operating in the western Costa del Sol region and the second serves inland areas, leaving from Málaga city. Other cities are more easily reached by road.

Electric train

There is a service every 30 minutes running from Málaga Airport to the centre of Málaga and as far as Fuengirola, covering all the major resorts of the Costa del Sol.

Animals on Trains

Domestic pets (dogs, cats and birds) with a maximum weight of six kilogrammes may travel on the RENFE national Grandes Lineas lines. Certain conditions must be met:

  • If a passenger objects, the animal must be removed
  • The owner is responsible for any damage or problems caused by the animal
  • Only one animal may be taken per passenger and it must be in a cage with maximum size 60 x 35 x 35 cm
  • On sleeper trains the animal may only travel as long as there is no objection from other passengers
  • The owner must have a valid ticket for the animal, which is 50 percent of the normal fair, excluding discounts and reductions

Animals on regional trains (trenes de Cercanías) in Málaga

Domestic animals (dogs, cats, birds) may travel on RENFE trains; there are certain restrictions: 
  • Animals are allowed on trains from the start of the daily service until 09:00, from 11:00-13:00 and from 20:00 to the end of the day
  • There is no weight limitation
  • It is not necessary to keep the animal in a cage although it must be on a leash
  • Where applicable dogs must wear a muzzle
  • The person accompanying the animal is responsible for it on the journey

Bicycles on trains

Bicycles may be taken on RENFE trains depending on the route.

Reductions & Discounts
  • Children under 4 travel free on RENFE trains
  • A reduction of 40% is given on the price of a single or return ticket for under 12s.
  • Group discounts are available but apply only if the group is making the same journey at the same time on the same date
  • The Tarjeta Joven (Youth Ticket) offers travellers aged 12-25 a 50% discount on all tickets on days classified as "blue". See the RENFE website for more details
  • Tarjeta Dorada (Golden Ticket) is available for pensioners (over 60) and people with a 65% or more disability. The ticket gives a 40% reduction on the price of single or return journey any day of the week. Those accompanying a disabled traveller also receive the discount
  • Family discounts are also available but are dependent on family size and circumstance
